Annual Meeting and Webinar on 5th of February 2026

How the use of Geosynthetics has evolved in Nordic countries? Arnstein Watn has been involved already several decades in Geosynthetics and he has collected the history into the Keynote lecture presented in EuroGeo8 conference in Lille 2025. This lecture Geosynthetics in the Northern countries: geotechnical and environmental challenges   will be represented in the IGS Nordic webinar in March 2026.

In addition to the keynote lecture, the webinar consists of two other presentations:

Arnstein Watn: New NorGeoSpec classification for filter geotextiles in drainage (new version of NorGeoSpec Guidelines is available on the website https://www.norgeospec.org/)

Saara Perikangas: Quantities of applied geosynthetics in Finland – results of questionnaire

Join the webinar on 5th of February starting at 13 am CET!

Webinar is free and open for all! Register through this LINK.

The Annual Meeting of IGS Nordic is organised straight after the webinar, about 15 am ECT.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to geosynthetic products, their manufacturing, and properties
  • Supporting steep slopes and retaining walls with geosynthetics
  • Geosynthetics in landfill structures
  • Geotextiles for filtration, separation, and drainage

The second part of the training will be held in the fall, focusing on other applications.

Note! On the previous day, May 6th, the NorGeoSpec seminar will be held in Lund, and its program is available here.

Annual Meeting and Webinar on 6th of March 2025

How to choose the proper Geosynthetic product into exceptional environmental conditions, such as high or low pH? Or how you can increase the Circular Economy and decrease the cost by use of local, low quality soils?

Join the webinar on 6th of March starting at 9 am CET and learn about possibilities.

The webinar consists of two presentations:

  • Catrin Tarnowski, Solmax: Environmental Conditions to be Considered in Design and Choice of Geosynthetics
  • Viktor Poberezhnyi, Huesker: Landslide Embankment with Geosynthetics on Project E10 Hålogalandsvegen, by using in-situ infill (Moraine)

Webinar is free and open for all! Register through this LINK.

The Annual Meeting of IGS Nordic is organised straight after the webinar, about 10 am ECT.

IGS Students Awards to EuroGEO8

IGS Student Award Program has been establised to support the participation of young professionals in IGS conferences. Aim is to disseminate knowledge and to improve
communication and understanding of geotextiles, geomembranes, and associated technologies among young geotechnical and geoenvironmental student engineers around the world. Program has been succesfull, and now is already 9th award period of 2022-2025.

The Award will be assigned for Europe in the year 2024 and all successful candidates will be invited to attend EuroGeo8 in Lille, France, 15-18 September 2025. Each chapter in the European Region of the IGS is invited to nominate one student of their chapter that has submitted a paper to the conference for the award.

The IGS student award will consist of up to USD 1,000 to be used to cover travel expenses of each winner to attend the EuroGeo8 conference. Each Award Winner will also receive complimentary registration to the conference and the gala dinner. Award Winners will present their work during the regular technical sessions and will be recognised for their achievements during the closing ceremony of the conference.

To qualify for the award the student needs to be

  1. nominated by their chapter;
  2. have been an undergraduate, M.Sc. or Ph.D. student during the period 2022-2025; and
  3. present a full paper at the conference.

Also IGS Nordic is nomininating a student. To apply, prepare and abstract and contact the chair of board Minna Leppänen before the end of October 2024.

Call for abstracts: EuroGEO8

Next European Geosynthetic Conference will be organized in Lille, France, from 15th to 18th September 2025.

The main theme of the Conference is “Technical Challenges and Environmental Imperatives for the 21st Century”. The new challenges facing construction professionals, environmental concerns, innovation and risk management will be at the heart of the discussions and presentations.

Call for Abstracts is open, and deadline for submission of abstracts is August 22th 2024.

IGS Nordic Chapter has been establised!

Joint Chapter of Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland was established on 26th of October 2021. The aim is to increase the activites and peoples involved by joining the forces.

The Finnish and Norwegian Chapters have been operating already more than decade, but in Sweden, Iceland and Denmark there hasn’t been a IGS Chapter yet. However, the number of the active members and resourses of the Norwgian and Finnish Chapters has been rather limited and the idea about co-operation and a joint Nordic Chapter has been discussed.

The aim of this new Chapter is to promote and spread technical reasonable and sustainable use of geosynthetics and foster the knowledge of geosynthetics
Focus on Nordic conditions and practices, specially focucing on Nordic conditions, typical aggregates and soils, and construction practices.

The first annual meeting will be on 10th of March, together with a webinar.
